There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia casinos that reside just over the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which casino wagering is against the law. Eight casinos are situated in a relatively tiny location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent area, a 3 to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular betting locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing capital gained from the gambling dens ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a couple of controls constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; however, financial sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are apparently needed to pass, there are ways around this, as is correct of most border crossings.

The initial Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat gambling hall, contains one hundred and fifty slots and sixty tables. The Naga river boat never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long opened. There are 150 slot machine games and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slot machine games and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 table games, including 87 punto banco (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and 66 of the familiar tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational vacation and hotel building that contains a number of comforts aside from the gambling hall, which houses 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slot machine games and 88 table games.
